Until earlier this year I’ve been known to joke that, with the possible exceptions of my wife and our lovely dog , my relationship with my cable provider was the most important one in my life.
What I didn’t love was my cable bill — it had ballooned to over $400 a month, with more than $40 devoted to junk fees connected to regional sports and local news rights. Another $50 a month went just to rent five cable boxes. I was also paying for a phone line that hadn’t been used in years. And that $400 didn’t even include what I was paying for Hulu, Disney +, Netflix, Amazon, Audible, the Criterion Channel, and MLB tv.
Like you, I had heard about cutting the cord on cable but was daunted by the procedure. What do you do first? Is my Internet good enough to switch to streaming? Would the interface of a streaming stick be unwieldy? Most importantly, for me, was the question of whether I would have to sacrifice watching live sports and local channels in the process.
